This micro case study is on the business portfolio of BK Modi Group and how the group has undergone a change over the years. It aims to study the rationale behind the group's investments in new business sectors.

Introduction

In the pre-liberalization era, when multinational companies (MNCs) were not sure of the approach path to be adopted for entering India, Dr. B.K.Modi (Modi), an Indian industrialist and founder of the BK Modi Group, partnered with MNCs such as Alcatel, Olivetti, Xerox, and Telstra to bring them into the country.

His focus was on areas of office automation and the telecom sector. In 1995, the group companies included Modi Xerox (photocopier machines), Modi Luft (aviation sector), Modi Olivetti (computer hardware), and Modi Alcatel (telecom equipment). However, in the post-liberalization era, Modi exited from these joint ventures and shifted his focus on areas of mobile telephony, IT enabled services (ITES), and real estate development.


In 2008, he liquidated his holdings in Spice Communications, the telecom services company which operated cellular mobile telephony services in the Indian states of Punjab and Karnataka...
